Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hacklab?

Vaasa Hacklab ry is a non-profit organization that provides tools and space for its members to make their own projects. The tools include a laser cutter, 3D printer, wood workshop, sewing machines and other things. Vaasa Hacklab follows the model of the global Hackerspace community, which includes around 2300 Hackerspaces and Hacklabs around the world, 15 of which are in Finland.

Is Hacklab a sub-branch of Vaasa University/VAMK/City of Vaasa/name your pick?

No. Hacklab is an independent organization.

Who can join Hacklab?

Anyone can join. Membership does not require any kind of education or knowledge about woodworking, electronics, programming, etc. Hacklab is a great place to start learning about these things, though!

Underage members are expected to be accompanied with a parent or a guardian unless they are visiting during an organized event.

How do I join Hacklab?

Visit the Membership page and click the “Become a member” button.

I’m not a member, but I would like to learn more. Can I visit?

Feel free to visit us on an open house day, which happen every Wednesday from 18:00 to around 21:00. We also organize a course or workshop of varying topics most Tuesdays, which do not require membership. See Calendar for up-to-date info.

Also consider joining the chat.

How much does this cost?

The membership fee is 20€ per year, which permits you to use Hacklab premises and tools during open house events and courses. If you want 24/7 access, you can pay a monthly fee of 10€ to 50€, which allows you to come and go as you want.

The amount of your monthly fee is decided by you and is based on your conscience. Pay what you think is right.

I would like to have something 3D printed or laser cut for me. How much will it cost?

Nobody works at Hacklab. If you are interested in learning to make the project yourself, you are welcome to visit us any Wednesday during the open hours and ask around.

I broke a tool at Hacklab. What now?

Tools can wear out and break while being used. This is normal. We try to keep basic replacement parts at Hacklab, such as extra saw blades and sandpaper but if something does not exist, feel free to go buy parts and fix it. You can then ask Hacklab to refund your money. If you don’t know how to fix it, ask the chat or send an email to members@vaasa.hacklab.POISTATAMA.fi and explain the situation.

A tool that I need is broken or out of use. When will it be fixed?

Nobody works at Hacklab. Tools usually get repaired when somebody needs to use them and repairs them. If you need to use the tool and don’t know how to fix it, try asking around during open house if somebody can help.
