Fun with laser cutter: wood grain sticker for phone

Inspiration for this project was a company named dbrand which sells skin sticker for phones, tablets and laptops in different colors and patterns. After looking around on their site I thought “How hard this can be?” and decided to try it myself.

I searched eBay with different terms and got best results with “car vinyl”. I ordered a sheet of wood grain pattern in 50 cm x 150 cm size and waited few weeks of shipping.

After receiving the sticker sheet I created design for phone back using Solvespace and skills learned on our course.

Design was laser cut from copy paper to test hole placements and radius of corners. After 5 prototype cuts and tweaks of design dimensions the final design was ready and was cut from actual sticker sheet.

This didn’t work out on first few tries as sticker material warped from release paper on flat surface due to it being stored rolled up for long time. Removing the sticker and reattaching it back to release paper we did get it flat enough for accurate cutting.

Few prototypes and final cut attached to my Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ phone can be seen in photo attached to this post. In total I used about 3 hours for this project.

For next laser cutting projects I might buy new sticker patterns and try to find ways to create designs for new phones in less time.
